Hasan Kamill was selected to bring to life the vision of the 75 years of the NHS mural. Two matching murals were painted for both the BRI and Southmead Hospitals in Bristol.
With a diverse and detailed meaning behind the murals represented by NHS staff and patients, Hass focused around 3 key focal points; past, present, and future.
"The past is represented through a 1950s-style male doctor. Painted in sepia tones to give a ‘classic’ representation of that era. He is looking up, symbolizing hope.
Giving ties back to Bristol’s history and the rich diversity of the city the central figure is a female key worker for the NHS, with possible links to the Windrush generation. Standing proud but humble in the center of the mural, she represents the city’s pride for the BRI and NHS.
The third key figure, representing the future, is a mother holding her newborn baby. This is particularly fitting for the mural painted at Southmead as it is situated at the back of the maternity ward.
The background features a solid oak tree as well as the HMT Empire Windrush boat. The oak tree being traditionally British symbolizes longevity and continued growth of the NHS."
