Tom Habben: A public sculptor & artist, based in Bristol, UK. His work often focuses on community engagement, and environmental consciousness. He designs, builds, and installs many of his artworks, and has been creating permanent public sculptures around the city of Bristol and country-wide for the past 10 years. Tom’s background was initially in illustration which feeds into his design process and considers himself a multi-disciplinary artist.
Project: The project developed for Dandara Living by Upfest Projects from discussion on natures network of community and connection; the wood wide web, or the “mycorrhizal network”.
Trees, plants, and mushrooms communicate through this network and use it to transmit signals if they are in danger, or deficient of certain minerals, and can transfer water, nitrogen, carbon and other minerals to one another via this network of fungi. It is essentially one of nature’s unseen networks for communication and support.
Since connectivity is at the core of this project, it seemed a missed opportunity not to connect with other local community groups, trusts, and businesses who had the same values in mind. We’re connecting with those that share this ethos around the importance of celebrating and sharing knowledge around our local natural habitats, as well as the importance of flora and fauna within our cityscape.
The sculpture’s narrative will not only represent the connectivity of BS3 but also reflects both the newly installed district heat network, heating the homes of Bedminster Green's newest residents through an underground network of pipes, as well as the superhighway network cabling laid deep below Malago Road digitally connecting the UK with the rest of the world.
